Denver is joining cities across the country to honor and remember law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty during National Police Week (May 13-19).
In 2012, the names of 362 fallen officers are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 362 officers include 162 officers who were killed in 2011, plus 199 officers who died in previous years. Two fallen members of the law enforcement community in the State of Colorado, Jay W. Sheridan (Limon) and David Roberts (Denver), will be added to the list.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. In 2012, National Police Week is Sunday, May 13 through Saturday, May 19.
The names of all 362 fallen officers nationwide will be formally dedicated on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, during the 24th Annual Candlelight Vigil on the evening of May 13, 2012. The vigil will be webcast live over the Internet beginning at 8 pm (EDT) on May 13 so people across the country can experience this unique ceremony.
