June is National Safety Month. At Shafner Law, we want to raise awareness of the risks faced throughout our lives and the steps we can all take to make our world a safer place.
Preventable injuries are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Only heart disease, cancer, and lower respiratory disease claim more lives.
Under 12 Months Old
Suffocation is the greatest preventable risk for infants. More than two children die each day from these preventable deaths. To help keep your baby safer, keep them in a crib instead of the parents’ bed, lay them on their back to sleep, and keep stuffed animals and blankets out of the crib.
Age 1 to 24
Traffic accidents cause nearly 21 preventable deaths each day. To help prevent fatalities, buckle up and use appropriate child seats and restraints and do your part to put an end to distracted driving, which claims over 3,000 lives each year.
Age 25 to 64
Poisoning or overdosing from prescription pain medication claims 92 lives every day. Prince was the latest celebrity fatality due to prescription pain meds. Always ask your doctor for alternatives and take the smallest dose that you can.
Over 65 Years Old
Falls cause more than 69 deaths each day in the elderly population. Take precautions such as using non-skid mats in the bathroom and shower and adequately light stairwells and walkways.
