According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States has the highest incidence of car accident fatalities of any high-income country. Roughly 90 people die each day in the U.S. in motor vehicle accidents. That’s over 30,000 people each year who lose their lives because of auto accidents.
In comparison to the death rate in 19 other wealthy countries, including Japan, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, the U.S. loses about 18,000 people more on average. Over the past 13 years, the U.S. has decreased road fatalities by 31 percent, but that falls far short of the progress made in other developed countries. Spain and Denmark have reduced road crash fatalities by 75.1 percent and 63.5 percent respectively.
The most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows an even grimmer picture. U.S. traffic fatalities have increased from 32,600 deaths in 2014 to 35,200 in 2015.
