Team Dispatch

Hello friends,

As we move toward spring and there’s still light in the sky as we wrap up the day, we’re even more tuned in to recovery and resilience. We’re opening windows, stepping outside more often, and feeling the lift that fresh air brings. For those recovering from an injury or navigating a difficult chapter, that sense of forward motion can feel especially meaningful. Recovery rarely happens all at once; more often, it arrives in small, steady signs of growth and progress, like tiny green shoots breaking through the snow.

Our team has been living that rhythm ourselves, having welcomed a new baby (and the joyful exhaustion that comes with midnight feedings), supporting one another through rounds of seasonal illness, and balancing the everyday responsibilities of work and family life. Like you, we know firsthand that everyone is carrying a lot — and that resilience often looks like showing up, adapting, and moving forward together.

This shared experience shapes how we serve our clients. After an injury, life doesn’t pause. Bills still show up in the mailbox, kids still need rides, and meals still need to be shopped for and prepared. Our role is to shoulder the legal complexities so you can focus on healing and rebuilding your life.

As we step into a new season, we remain committed to helping our clients move forward with clarity, compassion, and steady support. No matter what recovery looks like for you—whether it’s gradual progress, a moment to rest, or a whole new start—we’re here to walk alongside you.

All our best,
The Shafner Injury Law Team

Beau’s excited to introduce you to one of his besties, Ollie, who was abandoned at a campground in Arkansas and rescued by the Colorado Herding Dog Rescue.

Seriously underweight at adoption, this good boy has gained 20 pounds and is now healthy and happy. He loves his family, affection, and food, with a strong emphasis on food.

Hey, if you aren’t going to eat that…

P.S. Are you looking for a new pen pal, or do you want Beau and Ollie to meet your four-footed friends? They have their noses pressed to the computer screen waiting to hear from you at beau@shafnerlaw.com. Send them a note and a photo of your own pets and they’ll get right back to you!

Improving Access to Justice for Survivors

We’re thrilled to support the launch of The HIVE: A Family Justice Center at Crossroads Safehouse, Fort Collins.

The HIVE (Hub for Information, Validation, and Empowerment) reduces barriers, eliminates survivors navigating multiple systems alone, and creates coordinated, trauma-informed pathways to safety and healing. It provides advocacy, law enforcement support, medical care, housing navigation, legal services, and more, without survivors having to repeat their story.

Open House on Monday, March 24, from 4:00–6:00 p.m.
Doors open for survivor services on April 2, 2026

Standing With Brain Injury Survivors

March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month, and Wyoming has one of the highest rates of TBIs in the nation.

From car accidents and workplace incidents to falls and sports injuries, TBIs can change lives in an instant, and recovery can be a long, challenging road.

The Brain Injury Alliance of Wyoming connects survivors and caregivers with the resources, support groups, and advocacy they need to navigate that journey, and we’re proud to support their important work.

Join us in donating to help TBI survivors.

We Love Our Clients

“I am very grateful that Allie, Alan, and their team helped me during a very difficult time in my life! They went to bat for me with the insurance company when others would not. They were very dedicated and helped to finally close the case!”

What Happens After an Injury in Colorado?

From Legalese to Plain English

What are Damages?

When you hear the word damages, it might sound like a punishment or a fine. In personal injury law, however, damages simply refer to the money intended to compensate someone for losses caused by an injury.

The goal isn’t to assign a price to a person’s suffering — it’s to help restore financial stability and acknowledge the real impact an injury can have on everyday life.

Damages generally fall into two categories:

Economic Damages: Cover measurable costs such as medical bills, rehabilitation, lost wages, and reduced earning capacity.

Non-Economic Damages: Address the harder-to-measure effects, including pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life. In Colorado, non-economic damages may be subject to statutory limits, while economic losses are typically not capped.

Understanding damages helps clarify what a claim is really about: recovery, accountability, and the resources needed to move forward. When you see this term in a letter or hear it during your case, it simply refers to the compensation meant to support your healing and future well-being.

Can AI Change the Outcome of Your Personal Injury Claim?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere. It suggests what shows we should binge, finishes our text messages, and even helps doctors read medical scans. But what happens when AI shows up in something as personal and life-changing as your injury claim? Many conversations about AI and the law focus on whether or not lawyers will soon be replaced by machines. At this point, AI can’t litigate a case in court, so that’s not the real question claimants should ask. The bigger issue is whether AI could quietly change how your claim is evaluated, negotiated, and even decided. This post explores how AI might not just alter how lawyers practice law, but how it could directly affect the outcome of your personal injury claim—for better or worse. Where AI Already Shows Up [...]
