President Proclaims National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

Yesterday, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation declaring December 2015 to be National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. In the proclamation, the President stated: “During the holidays — a season that includes a spike in travel and celebrations that may include alcohol — and throughout the year, we must remain vigilant and aware of drivers that are distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

During this holiday season, the President encouraged Americans to:

  • Speak up about how dangerous impaired driving is
  • Don’t let friends or family drive under the influence
  • Keep the driver focused on the road when you are a passenger
  • Limit distractions as a driver and as a passenger
  • Always wear your seatbelts no matter how short your trip

Each year, more than 10,000 people lose their lives because of drunk drivers. One-third of all traffic deaths each year involve impaired drivers. The holiday season can be particularly dangerous. New Year’s Day is often the most dangerous driving day due to holiday revelers trying to make their way home after New Year’s Eve parties.

This holiday season, you can do your part to prevent impaired driving. Remember to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, stay the night, or take public transportation.
