With traffic fatalities on the rise this year, the National Safety Councils is predicting that this Labor Day Weekend will be the deadliest on record since 2009. An estimated 438 people will die in traffic crashes from September 2 though Labor Day, September 5. That’s more people than a typical 747 airplane holds.
This year marks the highest estimate that NSC has given since 2008, when it predicted 439 deaths and 473 people were actually killed that weekend. So far this year, 100 people have been killed each day in traffic accidents. Part of what increases the fatality rate for the holiday weekend is a higher incidence of drunk drivers on the roadways. Almost half of auto accident fatalities for Labor Day weekend 2014 were due to drunk drivers.
To combat this problem The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in conjunction with law enforcement across the country has launched their campaign – Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over – which runs through Labor Day Weekend.
Remember to plan ahead this weekend if you will be celebrating the end of summer with your family and friends. Call for a ride or use public transportation. Don’t become a statistic.
